Yale researchers: still no clear sign AI is reshaping the labor market — yet

Despite two years of rapid AI adoption across industries, The Budget Lab at Yale’s ongoing research into the technology’s labour-market effects has yet to find a clear, statistically detectable shift in the occupational mix of the US workforce that lines up with AI’s spread.
Using a synthetic differences-in-differences approach that compares employment trends in sectors with heavy AI exposure against those with less, the researchers report that “the occupational mix is not yet changing in ways that clearly align with the introduction of AI into the workforce,” and that measures of AI usage show no clear correlation with employment fluctuations so far.
The finding runs counter to some of the more dramatic predictions of near-term, AI-driven job displacement, though the research team is careful to frame it as an early snapshot rather than a final word — they plan continuous updates as more data becomes available, on the expectation that measurable effects, in either direction, are more likely to show up as adoption deepens further into actual workflows rather than pilot projects.
