The gap illustrates a pattern showing up across multiple industries this year, not just healthcare: piloting an AI tool in a controlled setting is relatively cheap and low-risk, but scaling it into a live clinical or operational workflow — with all the data integration, staff retraining, liability and regulatory questions that involves — is a fundamentally harder problem that most organisations are still working through.
The figures add useful context to more optimistic-sounding adoption statistics circulating elsewhere this year, such as the widely cited claim that seventy percent of healthcare organisations now “use” AI in some form. Both can be true at once: broad, shallow experimentation is now nearly universal, while deep, production-grade deployment remains genuinely rare.
